C3S

C3S is one of the Copernicus Earth observation services, operated by ECMWF. It provides authoritative climate data and information, including reanalysis, seasonal forecasts, and climate indicators. C3S supports adaptation, policy, and business decisions with trusted datasets.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is part of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It consolidates satellite, in-situ, and model data into comprehensive climate datasets.

C3S offers global reanalysis (ERA5), seasonal forecasts, and sector-specific climate indicators, making it a cornerstone for both scientific research and applied climate services. Its open-access approach allows governments, businesses, and communities to plan for climate adaptation and risk management.

Relationship to Lemu

Several Atlas indicators integrate C3S data, particularly through Copernicus land cover classification maps:

By using C3S datasets, Lemu ensures consistent, scientifically robust baselines for biomass and ecosystem monitoring.

Examples in Practice

💡
A city government using C3S climate projections to design heatwave preparedness plans and adapt urban infrastructure.
💡
An energy company integrating ERA5 reanalysis data into wind and solar resource assessments to optimise renewable investments.
💡
An insurance firm applying C3S climate indicators to evaluate long-term flood and drought risk across its portfolio.
