NCAA

The Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services project (NCAA) is a joint initiative supporting countries in integrating ecosystem and biodiversity values into national economic planning and reporting.

Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services

The NCAA is a joint project by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), funded by the European Union. It assists countries in implementing the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) to measure and value ecosystem services and natural capital. The project builds capacity for governments to integrate biodiversity and ecosystem service values into their economic decision-making, planning, and reporting frameworks.

Relationship to Lemu

NCAA underpins the statistical and accounting frameworks that support Nature Intelligence. By aligning Atlas with SEEA-based methodologies, Lemu ensures scientific rigour and compatibility with global standards for natural capital accounting.

Example in Practice

💡
Mexico: Integrated ecosystem services into national statistics, improving land-use planning and conservation strategies.
💡
South Africa: Applied ecosystem accounting to water resource management, linking biodiversity values with national development goals.
💡
India: Used SEEA frameworks to account for forest ecosystem services, supporting better policy for sustainable forestry and carbon management.
